NACOGDOCHES GOLDEN DRAGONS |
NHS field house upgrades celebrated Saturday, August 11, 2007 After several months of hard work, members of the Nacogdoches Dragon Quarterback Club were happy to show off the new varsity dressing room in the Nacogdoches High School field house to the community during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday. The new locker room is the result of hard work of many coaches, players, and the help of the community, according to athletic booster President Jeff Hamilton.
"We've just done a lot of work in a short amount of time," Hamilton said, "and it took a team effort. A lot of business people stepped up for us and contributed." Saturday's ceremony celebrated the first phase of the Dragon Vision program to upgrade and renovate the NHS fieldhouse. Hamilton said the money raised helped to "overhaul" everything, including giving new looks to lockers, paint, ceilings, carpets, floors, lights and to open up the room by combining the space from the old locker room and taking out what was an abandoned shower and rest room area. "It was a complete make-over," Hamilton said. "The old metal lockers were old and rusted," The new wooden lockers are bigger, and each locker displays the Nacogdoches Dragon logo carved into the wood with individual name plates. But according to Coach William Harper, the most important feature added was functionality. "When you get 59 kids in a room this size, each about 200-plus pounds, it certainly gets crowded," Harper said. "(In the old locker room) players would get their equipment, and have to take it to the next room to get dressed. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know something had to be done." Harper originally had the idea to upgrade the locker room but knew it was a big job, and there were not a lot of financial resources available from the school. "The school district is so strapped ( for funds) they couldn't (build) it for us," Harper said. "And I was told it would take a lot, but it was possible. And with donations from the community, we got it done."
